the artist
Anna’s minimalist mark-making is like poetry – each brushstroke and splash of paint carefully considered and deliberate – laden with meaning and purpose. A London-based artist, she most often works with water-based medias on paper, raw canvas and wood – the organic properties of these materials shining through. Transformation and Japanese aesthetics are key areas of focus, with influences from the zen philosophy ‘Ma’ and Shibumi principles.
the story
‘Arizona Preparatory Sketch’ collection of miniature artworks is focused on the rising and setting sun in Arizona. On a recent trip, Anna’s jet lag had her awake at dawn, where she often found herself sketching as the sun rose over the Arizonian landscape. These small, vibrant works reflect her gaze and hands in motion together – her eyes scanning the scenery as her hands move across the paper. These preparatory sketches act as a bridge between Anna’s initial representational drawings and her larger works; offering her a space to make compositional decisions before scaling the artwork up.
