artist's bio

anna’s minimalist mark-making is like poetry – each brushstroke and splash of paint carefully considered and deliberate – laden with meaning and purpose. a london-based artist, she most often works with water-based medias on paper, raw canvas and wood – the organic properties of these materials shining through. transformation and japanese aesthetics are key areas of focus, with influences from the zen philosophy ‘ma’ and shibumi principles.

the natural world provides rich source material which anna then deconstructs and reimagines into a curation of shapes, colours and textures. this stripping away of the superfluous allows her to capture the essence of her subject, but also allows us to slow down, observe and ground ourselves in the serenity of the work.

in this collection of serene, gentle and evocative works, anna whisks us away to watch the evening sun on the blustery hills of llyn du, caersws, wales. with a limited colour palette and careful, gestural marks she captures the sensory experience and feeling of this welsh landscape, revisiting it like a memory. using the japanese principles of shibumi, these poetic works encourage us to pause and experience the unobtrusive beauty of the essence of the subject matter.
