elina ruka "still not yet"
original photography with silk threads
about the artist
elina ruka's photographic work centres upon examining the human relationship to the natural world, specifically water. through wide ranging material investigation she creates images that both reflect her own issues as well as evoke an emotional response on the part of the viewer. with her work, she is trying to understand what water is and also show water within a larger context of meaning.
story
in this series of photographic works embroidered with thread elina examines the power and beauty of the sea as it connects to our relationships. inspired by sailor’s wives and the idea of being distanced from the person you love, elina looks at how to connect with someone not present. the embroidery references the wool works traditionally made by sailors at sea, as well as the needlework the wives would spend time on at home. here the thread and the seascape act as bridges between lovers. by looking out at the horizon, we can feel closer to each other.
