the artist
for local walthamstow artist helen chambers, each painting is a journey of discovery. as she layers paint upon the surface she is continually responding to the ever-changing palette, marks and textures before her. the natural world is her anchor and she employs an expressive, intuitive approach to mark making – taking the finished works outside the boundaries of realism. her landscapes sit in that intriguing space between abstraction and representation – vibrant and immersive.
the story
helen has lived close to the walthamstow marshes for 20 years. exploring the local trails and havens in this area and alongside the river lea has become a habit, one particularly solidified during lockdown. as helen’s creative journey grew to encompass abstract artworks – her painterly landscapes moved gently and naturally towards abstraction with an intuitive and expressive touch.
this large scale and immersive piece is inspired by an end of spring walk through the marshes, and the brooks and rivers that vanish under bridges in these areas – those past and present.
