clare halifax "larkswood lido, chingford"
clare halifax "larkswood lido, chingford"
limited edition of 40 screen print
about the artist
in clare’s world all is harmonious and quiet. bird’s fly in the sky, colours sit gently alongside each other, delicate patterns adorn surfaces, backgrounds, rivers and skies. an east london-based artist and traditional printmaker, her intricate and illustrative artworks demonstrate an incredibly skilful use of line, as well as her love for representation and narrative. with a background in textile design, she carefully balances design, pattern and colour in each work to create a contemporary work which connects to a particular place, city, building or vignette of the natural world.
the story
larkswood lido resurrects for us in this intricately created miniature by clare. she draws our attention to the surrounding forest - and we get a sense of how unusual and beautiful this lido was throughout the 40s and 50s - nestled deep in the natural landscape in chingford. this pool was one of the most famous in the uk before it’s closure - used for sporting events, colgate adverts and the famous tv show ‘it’s a knockout’. as an important community space, the water would have been a welcome reprieve from neighbouring city life - a haven in waltham forest now forever lost - but celebrated here in art.
