rachel barber "midnight blackthorn"
framed original painting on wood
the artist
rachel brings a feather light touch to her paintings and monoprints, summoning an atmospheric, ethereal beauty which is rooted in her experiences of the natural world. based between cheshire and a studio in manchester, much of rachel’s inspiration comes from her local landscape, the peak district and the coast of the llyn peninsular. she captures a sense of time and place by exploring texture, light, movement and form. her creative process is organic and experimental as she layers and manipulates paint and ink on the surface, often yielding unique and unexpected results which become intrinsic to the final artwork.
the story
every spring, the blackthorn blossom appears along our pathways and hedgerows. clouds of snow-white flowers billow over its dark and thorny branches. later in the autumn, it produces inky blue fruits- sloes, best for making sloe gin! this wonderful flower is not only plentiful for us humans, they are also a great provider for all kinds of wildlife, producing early nectar for bees and a safe nesting place for our flying friends.
rachel is captivated by the every-day contrasts in nature. in these original paintings she captures the barbed blackthorn branches entangled amongst the delicate blossom of flowers. the trickling light, finding its way to the darker centre through a soft ethereal mist.
