embellished vintage photograph
about the artist
johanna is a London based artist who explores contemporary portraiture and the female gaze. her large scale original works are created by pouring layers of diluted oil paint on a flat canvas in a series of translucent and fluid layers, rarely using a paintbrush. In this way the process is spontaneous and unpredictable - holding tension between the controlled and the uncontrolled, representation and abstraction.
the story
for this series of work johanna worked from found vintage imagery of past unknown e17 residents. each person and image re-imagined into a dreamscape – full of precious metal leaf detailing, painted details, collage and pressed flowers. these mysterious people, traces of the past, lost and found for a contemporary audience. a surreal menagerie to trigger our own ideas and stories of who they may have been. In this series we see subtle references to walthamstow’s past and present – morris vines and pattern, references to the wetland’s bird life, found pressed flowers from the area.
