the artist
johanna is a walthamstow based artist who explores contemporary portraiture and the female gaze. her large scale original works are created by pouring layers of diluted oil paint on a flat canvas in a series of translucent and fluid layers, rarely using a paintbrush. In this way the process is spontaneous and unpredictable - holding tension between the controlled and the uncontrolled, representation and abstraction.
the story
a lost treasure of walthamstow is nostalgically depicted in this watercolour and ink painting by johanna. opened in 1976 by pete and mari stennett, this record shop and label became pivotal for punk and post-punk music in london and globally until it’s closure in 1983. small wonder records famously released the debut record from the cure, as well as numerous releases by bauhaus and crass, amongst many others. this artwork transports us back to the early 80s and tells just a snippet of the story of this fascinating space on hoe street – alive with devoted and engaged punk music fans and a music-loving walthamstow community.
