ink, watercolour and gold leaf on paper
about the artist
johanna is a walthamstow based artist who explores contemporary portraiture and the female gaze. her large scale original works are created by pouring layers of diluted oil paint on a flat canvas in a series of translucent and fluid layers, rarely using a paintbrush. In this way the process is spontaneous and unpredictable - holding tension between the controlled and the uncontrolled, representation and abstraction.
the story
as a local artist, johanna remembers this dazzling cocktail bar from when she first moved to walthamstow. on entering the space you see beautiful and crumbling echoes of this space’s past life as the emd grenada cinema. traces of former glory across the walls and ceiling, embraced and adorned in this bar and event space. it had style, life and was buzzing with locals. this artwork resurrects the memorable signage in glittering gold leaf – allowing us to get a sense of witnessing a fleeting moment of history with a light, painterly touch. this delicate piece is an ode to a building with many lives – about to become the new soho theatre!
