the artist
stepping into anil mistry’s world is jarring, fantastical and joyous. he takes us around the globe to familiar buildings and cityscapes, but with an unfamiliar lens. colours and shapes are heightened and manipulated. his trademark palm trees loom high in urban settings, out of place and oversize, transporting us to warmer climates.
uk-based anil fuses photography from his travels with mixed medias such as spray paint, stencils, acrylics and screen-printing. through these materials he creates fresh, new interpretations of urban landscapes. escapist, transformative and exciting.
the story
travel back to 1960 with anil mistry - to the iconic whipps cross lido. a beloved community space that used to dwell by the edge of the forest. anil was struck by an incredible archival image of this space, and used it as springboard to create a multi layered artwork which oozes nostalgia and glamour. he adds his signature looming palm trees and a quirky pink flamingo, allowing us to experience this scene through anil’s eyes - slightly surreal and blazing with style.
